25.1. Synopsis

This chapter will cover some of the more frequently used network services on UNIX(R) systems. We will cover how to install, configure, test, and maintain many different types of network services. Example configuration files are included throughout this chapter for you to benefit from.

After reading this chapter, you will know:

  • How to manage the inetd daemon.

  • How to set up a network file system.

  • How to set up a network information server for sharing user accounts.

  • How to set up automatic network settings using DHCP.

  • How to set up a domain name server.

  • How to set up the Apache HTTP Server.

  • How to set up a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Server.

  • How to set up a file and print server for Windows(R) clients using Samba.

  • How to synchronize the time and date, and set up a time server, with the NTP protocol.
